On Friday, August 6, 2021, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded $30 million to 32 state and local governments, local housing authorities, and nonprofit organizations. These grants, provided through the HUD’s Older Adults Home Modifications Program, allows for low-income seniors to remain in their homes rather than be moved to assisted care facilities through safety and functional home modifications. These modifications such as grab bars, railings, and non-slip strips reduce the risk of falling and help older adults to age in place. Among the 32 recipients was the Lake Cumberland Area Development District, awarded with funds to make home modifications in 120 units.
